Counterpart II Bench

Counterpart II extends the same material references from Counterpart, a commission by the Duke of Devonshire and Chatsworth House referencing 18th Century coal mines and extensive mineral collections of the Duchess of Devonshire. Counterpart’s materials – coal and resin – merge in Counterpart II. The unification of two distinctive materials creates an intimate juxtaposition of opposites; dark-light, absorbing-refracting, dull-bright, textured-smooth in a single linear element. The close proximity of materials highlights the transformative power of carbon’s molecular structure from graphite (coal) to diamond (resin).
