Karolina Maszkiewicz is a Polish American sculptor, illustrator and designer living and working in Los Angeles. Her current series of work integrates organic elements of nature she finds in the area, from the mountains of Malibu to the deserts of Joshua Tree, into extraordinarily graceful kinetic hanging sculptures.
Balancing both the beauty and fragility of nature, the works embody investigations of life, death, rebirth and the more tenuous side of humanity’s relationship with the natural world. These are concepts artists have explored throughout time, but Maszkiewicz looks at them in our specific time and place; a glimpse of grace and delicacy in the chaos of modern urban life.
The works reflect Maszkiewicz’s process of more deeply understanding nature’s magnificence as well as emphasizing an imperative to savor and protect it.
